Keeping Resolutions

When you think of New Year’s resolutions what is the first thing that pops into your mind?  Most likely it is weight loss/fitness.  No matter what size, shape, or physical condition a person is in, they are always hoping to improve themselves in some way.  Whether it be walk a half mile every day or run at least 3 marathons, the goal is similar and should be approached in the healthiest and most realistic way.  Studies show that only 8% of those who make a new year’s resolution actually carry out their goal.  Most often it only takes about two weeks to fall into old habits. Perfectly Interesting Health News DecemberFollow these tips (modified from the huffington post) and your chances of actually keeping your resolutions will increase dramatically!

  1. Set short-term goals for long-term results.  Take it day by day and celebrate small accomplishments
  2. Make your resolution about the journey, not the outcome. Make it fun and enjoyable
  3. Schedule time for your resolution.
  4. Employ the buddy system.
  5. Make yourself accountable – State your goals/Keep Records/Get an app!
  6. Modify your resolution if need be, it’s ok to have set backs
  7. Don’t Give up – it’s very common to have set backs but it is important not to let them take your sights away from your long term goal.
  8. Do what works for you and in the best way.  Do not succumb to fad diets or other unhealthy ways to lose weight.

Must Watch Movie (other than Star Wars)

In-between the Holiday specials, you might want to make time for this must watch movie: Consumed.  It is a dramatic thriller that explores the issues of GMO’s in the real world. The story is centered around a working, single mother on a hunt to uncover the causes of her son’s mysterious illness. The plot includes the side stories of an Organic farmer, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation, two Scientists on the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-Cop caught in the middle of all the drama.  Erin Brockovich describes the film as:

“Entertaining, relatable, suspenseful and informative, and a real eye opener to what is going on. This film has re-inspired and educated me. “   -ERIN BROCKOVICH

GMO updates

Do you recall the approval of genetically modified Salmon by the FDA mentioned in the November issue of Perfectly Interesting Health News?  There was an enormous uproar from advocates on the various dangers that this genetically modified fish could impose.  One of the biggest concerns was the fact that labeling was not going to be required!  Thankfully the Congress took a positive action this month in the favor of GMO free advocates.  Congress approved a bill enforcing the FDA to label the GMO Salmon before it can become available to consumers.  Read more here:
