Planting the Seed – The First Earth Day
“. . . on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was held, one of the most
remarkable happenings in the history of democracy. . . ”
-American Heritage Magazine, October 1993
Once upon a time politicians basically ignored the state of our environment. In the midst of the Vietnam War senator Gaylord Nelson and others were worrying about many other things, but one issue that stuck out for the senator was the lack of concern for the environment. He decided it was his personal mission to make environmental awareness a political agenda. He decided to talk to the President which spurred Kennedy’s five-day, eleven-state conservation tour. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in making politicians look into environmental care, but it did strike a cord with the people. The senator did not give up and announced at a conference that there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment in the spring of 1970. The word took off (which before texting and instant messaging was a lot harder to accomplish) and thanks to the passion and hard work of everyday people a nationwide agenda was formed. The very first earth day was nothing short of astounding- just look at this picture!
Senator Nelson quoted:
“Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”
