Can you eat an entire bowl of popcorn in one sitting? Well guess what, it might actually be good for you!
Current studies found that the amount of polyphenols (micronutrients that play a major part in preventing diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases) in popcorn was as high as 300 mg a serving! This can be compared to 114 mg for a serving of sweet corn and 160 mg for a serving of fruit. Also, popcorn is 100% unprocessed whole grain!
Now of course this does not include microwaved, butter soaked , candy coated popcorn. A small popcorn from a typical movie theater is 45% fat and around 600 calories. Ugh. The healthiest way to make popcorn is to air pop it. The second healthiest is to stove popped with a healthy oil, like coconut oil! Here is a great Popcorn Recipe to try out:
Spicy Popcorn with Coconut Oil
- 6 Tablespoons of coconut oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon curry powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
