Q: Does Cod Liver Oil need to be refrigerated?

Due to the natural fermentation process, none of Green Pasture’s products require refrigeration. The naturally occurring live enzymes will not only keep the product fresh, but will actually increase the nutritive value over time. Alternatively, Green Pasture products may be stored in the refrigerator or freezer. This will not damage the product although some customers find that crystallization/increased odor occurs.

Q: Does Cod Liver Oil vary from batch to batch?

Cod Liver Oil (and other healthy oils) will vary from batch to batch depending on the diet of the fish and the season in which it was extracted. The odor depends primarily on variances in tyramine. Some batches may develop fat crystals identified as phyto sterols. These crystals form as a result of phyto plankton in the diet of the fish.

Q: What is the nutrient content in a serving of Cod Liver Oil?

Because Green Pasture creates traditional Cod Liver Oil through the process of natural fermentation, it is impossible to set a standardized nutrient count per serving/per bottle. Only highly processed fish oils created with synthetic nutrients will able to provide an exact IU number.

Vitamins A and D and fatty acids EPA and DHA will vary slightly from bottle to bottle depending on the diet of the fish. Below you will find estimated percentages of EPA and DHA calculated by Green Pasture.

Cod Liver Oil: EPA = 15% / DHA = 10%

Skate Liver Oil: EPA = 12% / DHA = 16%

Q: What does emulsified mean?

Emulsification, in simple terms, is the blending of two or more substances that are not easily combined. Green Pasture has created emulsified products by combining soluble fiber with Cod Liver Oil. Emulsified Cod Liver Oil products prevent tingling/burning in the back of the throat.

Q: Should Green Pasture Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend be taken with or without food?

Green Pasture products are naturally packed with nutrients and thus the supplement will benefit you whenever you choose to take it. Some foods can have a nutrient muddling effect, so it is best to take the supplement at least 15 minutes before eating. Some people find that taking the supplement before a meal increases the ease of digestibility and decreases the fishy after taste. The supplement can also be taken without food.

Q: Why have I received an expired product?

Green Pasture has recently switched from using an ‘expiration date’ to using a ‘manufactured on date.’ The product will remain stable for at least 2 years past this date.

Quoting from Green Pasture:

“Many perceive our products are better with age as the living essences within the product are not destroyed. While the FDA is caught in a quagmire of undetermined testing and validity, freshness and reliability is available via manufacture dating. With manufacture dating the finished product is ready to be sold at the consumer level without the extra-added 6-month wait. As a result, the product you purchase will not be decreased in freshness or efficacy. We at Green Pasture Products have chosen to use the “Manufacture Date” as many other companies are currently using instead of the “Expiration Date,” so you will receive the freshest product available when you order.”
