The FDA and USDA’s concept of the safety genetically modified organisms is so incorrect, it’s sickening. In theory, new products and production methods are introduced to the consumer because they have been proven safe. In this case, GMOs were introduced to the consumer and the economy simply because they were never proven unsafe.

This theory is flawed because until recently, there were no long term studies conducted on the effects of ingesting genetically modified organisms. More shockingly, when a long term study was finally conducted, the results showed that GMOs were in fact extremely UNSAFE.

This study was conducted by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and then published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal on September 19, 2012.

This study is considered the first study conducted on the long term/lifetime effects of eating genetically modified organisms. The double-blind, peer reviewed study examined thousands of rats fed a diet of GMO maize and exposed to the herbicide Roundup over the course of their lifetime (700 days). This same corn is used to create thousands of popular corn cereals, corn tortillas and corn snack chips, not to mention its extremely popular use as food supply for farm animals. Monsanto Industry’s Roundup is considered the world’s popular herbicide and is commonly sprayed on farm crops and even used for personal lawn and garden care.

The results showed:

• 50% of the male rats and 70% of the female rats fed GMO corn and exposed to the herbicide experienced premature death.
• Rats exposed to trace amounts of Roundup (the amount legally allowed in US water supplies) had a 200-300% increase in large tumors.
• Rats that ingested GMO corn and exposed to the herbicide suffered severe organ damage including liver and kidney damage.

In reference to these results, involved researcher Dr. Antoniou stated “We can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health.”

Proposition 37, entitled the “Right to Know” ballot, is the first step towards fighting back. If passed, this legislature will require companies to label foods containing GMOs.
