Upon moving into our new apartment, my boyfriend and I were graced with our first working dishwasher. Though I try to wash by hand whenever possible, after cooking large meals requiring multiple dishes, the dishwasher has become my saving grace. In an attempt to save energy, I had been turning the heated dryer option off and simply letting my dishes dry naturally. Apparently, turning the heated dryer off when you live in the very humid Ocean State is NOT a good idea… Needless to say, I soon came home to a very moldy dishwasher.

A quick Google search led hundreds of DIY dishwasher cleaning methods. Unfortunately, most of these methods called for heavy duty bleach and other toxic cleaning supplies. With a basic knowledge of non-toxic cleaning ingredients, I set off to create a non-toxic method of cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing my moldy dishwasher.

Ingredients:
½ cup warm water
¼ cup Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar
1-2 tbsp. Yoreganics Brightens & Whitens

Directions: Fill a dishwasher safe measuring cup with ¼ cup of ACV and ½ cup of warm water. Holding the cup over the sink, stir in 1-2 tbsp. of Yoreganics Brightens & Whitens. The formula will bubble but a quick stir should prevent the mixture from spilling over. Once the bubbling has settled, place the full measuring cup, upright, on the top shelf of your dishwasher and run the dishwasher as you normally would. When the dishwasher has run its course, remove the measuring cup, discard any leftover mixture, and enjoy your (seemingly) brand new dishwasher!

I wish I had time to take before and after pictures because I was literally jaw-dropping impressed. Our dishwasher is now cleaner than it was when we moved in!
