Can you eat an entire bowl of popcorn in one sitting? Well guess what, it might actually be good for you!
New Research is suggesting Popcorn as a Powerful Superfood!
Current studies found that the amount of polyphenols (micronutrients that play a major part in preventing diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases) in popcorn was as high as 300 mg a serving! This can be compared to 114 mg for a serving of sweet corn and 160 mg for a serving of fruit. Also, popcorn is 100% unprocessed whole grain!
Now of course this does not include microwaved, butter soaked , candy coated popcorn. A small popcorn from a typical movie theater is 45% fat and around 600 calories. Ugh. The healthiest way to make popcorn is to air pop it. The second healthiest is to stove popped with a healthy oil, like coconut oil! Here is a great Popcorn Recipe to try out:
Spicy Popcorn with Coconut Oil
Ingredients
- 6 Tablespoons of coconut oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon curry powder
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- salt (optional)
- 2 gallons of popped popcorn
Directions:
Melt coconut oil in a saucepan over medium heat: stir in garlic, curry powder, chili powder, turmeric and cumin; heat for 1 minute. Reduce to low and simmer for 1 more minute. Pour over the popcorn and serve immediately.
